I posted the first picture on 1/21 of my pepper seeds that I started on 1/12 and received a lot of positive feedback, so I figured I would post an update. This is how the fleet is progressing as of 3/2!

Overall I am very impressed with how far they have come. You can tell which ones I struggled with when up potting to solo cups, but hey, none of them actually died! The smallest one (chocolate habanero) was left with about its main tap root only when I failed to get it out of the seed tray. TBD on if I keep them all going or not.

One question I have is: do you think the jalapeno is ready to be up potted again? It’s currently about 7” tall and has a pretty decent amount of root growth through the cup, although it isn’t circling yet either. They are pretty dry right now and when I tried to pull on it a bit I was worried I would damage it… any tips would be helpful!

First off I want to say your toothpick labels are brilliant! May give this a try myself if I need to try attempting a few more seeds for the ones that didn’t sprout.

I am still new to peppers myself, but if you find yourself having to water the jalapeño more frequently due to it drying out quickly then it might be a sign it’s ready to pot up. I did hear it’s better to pot up before the roots become root-bound but when you can see plenty of roofs from the bottom.

  2. My personal rule is I will upsize containers when the plant is as big as the top of the container in total area coverage. Rootbound takes a long, long while and if you transplant too early you risk root rot.
