If I have averaged cooking steaks twice a month over the past 20 years at 4 steaks at a time, I would be approaching 2000 steaks cooked. I think I’ve mostly got it down. And I know using A1 seems amateur hour but there’s a very good and nostalgic reason why I use A1.

So I escaped from communist Vietnam in 1975, a child refugee luckily whisked to Orange County. My dad wasn’t so lucky, with his military training he was left behind and put in prison camp for 5 years before successfully escaping, and joining us in Orange County. I didn’t have a dad the first five years of my life. When he arrived, it was his mission to teach me about steaks, from ribeyes to NY to sirloin. And he always used A1 sauce. I asked him why, and he said because when you grade something like a cow or steak, A is the first letter and 1 is the first number so A1 means it’s the best. Just like you, my A1 son. And uhhh I’ve been eating A1 with my steak since then. Miss you so much Dad.
Is it nostalgia for when you had taste buds?
A good steak doesn’t need a1 sauce. If you need sauce it’s probably not a good steak.
You’re without a doubt the first and only person on this subreddit that talked about using A1 and got a pass from me. I’m miss my dad a lot. And your post reminded me of the steaks he occasionally cooked. And the steak sauce. Grilling definitely wasn’t his superpower. And we didn’t have a lot of money then, so he bought cheap steaks. And he cooked them until thoroughly gray. Thankfully, he taught me some other cool stuff that I use every day. Your steak looks like it’s cooked to a great temperature. Maybe if you just put some A1 on the plate, but savored the actual flavor of the steak. I don’t own any steak sauce. But you helped me remember my dad. Here to our Dads.
Ok, I’ll let the A1 slide. But just this once…. You had a great dad!!!
A1 is really good mixed up in your burger meet too
A1 is delicious fuckem
A1 is delicious and anyone who has a problem with it is a snob
Cross-hatching looks nice… but lacks in flavor to me. Personally like more flavor/ crusty carcinogens. Cheers to your A1 pops.
Okay I’ve been new to steaks and been using A1 quite a lot, may I know what’s the issue with it here? Genuinely curious
Wonder what was more torturous for your Pa: having to eat A1 or the Vietnamese prison camp not knowing if he’d ever make it out alive?
Well the steak looks deliciousss
A1 is good. I was a kid and introduced to dipping my sliced steak in a pool of it much like your picture. Of course there’s days I prefer it without, but I’ll never understand people’s hate for it.
I see allot of medium rare steaks on this sub, I like this color, looks really good
Glad your family made it out of there!
And I love that you have this memory of your father, you sound like an A1 son!
I personally don’t dip my steak in sauces other than the blood on the plate, I prefer mine rare to med-rate, but to each their own.
