Too Much Light / Light Strike? (see comment)

We recently picked up an older Transtherm Ermitage wine fridge. It appears to have a UV filter over the glass, but as we are getting some bottles meant for aging we want to ensure our conditions are optimal. The fridge is at 55f and 55% humidity. Our concern is that the fridge is next to a window and gets direct sunlight for about 3 hours a day. This doesn’t cause any temperature fluctuations, but is the UV filter on the glass enough to protect from light strike, or should we get a shade for the glass?

What is the difference between light and light strike? For that matter, what is light strike?

If you’re really worried, I’m sure you can install and tinted film over the glass fairly easily

Just install a film on the glass that doesn’t allow light through it

Apart from that, be very careful if you’ve got a fridge on carpet. If it leaks you’re not going to notice. I’d set the fridge over a metal pan with a slight lip.

I think you should definitely screen the glass, with the window nearby the wine would definitely spoil! Beware that direct sunlight also raises the temperature, so your fridge will also consume more energy!

Ideally you want no light so right next to a window is not ideal at all. I have all my wines in a spare room at the back of my apartment with a window but they are all underneath the window. Not ideal but definitely better. If it’s not hot in that spot you can always chuck a curtain over the fridge as a quick fix if you don’t have much space
