    You can also add some good quality chorizo to it, or ham or chicharron. All kinds of meats go good with it.

    Been making/eating charro beans all of my life, I’m in my 60s.

    Some people add beer to it to make it “Frijoles Borrachos”.

    Frijoles charro is my favorite bean style. I am in Nyarit, Mexico, right now. Drove up from Zamora Michoacan for a week at the beach. My BIL was born in Michoacan. He has the family house there. I have learned so much about Mexican cooking from him and his family. We always have frijoles charro on hand. A bowl of beans and fresh tortillas are heaven as a late night snack.

    I use any and all kind of cold cut meats, but the tomato with green chile, nope, use fresh tomato, if I want them with an extra kick add pickled jalapeños
