Celebrating getting a result of 100% on my WSET Level 2.
Conterno Fantino Barolo Vigna del Gris 2004, paired with seared duck breast and a grapefruit, fennel and sage glaze.
This wine is still showing tonnes of freshness and verve. Aromatically, there’s cherry, dried strawberry, prune and dried fennel. Then a tonne of cedar, cigar box, damp soil, wet leaves, mocha, sandalwood and clove. Surprisingly none of the tar and roses, at least to my nose.
Still fresh, and in its peak I’d judge. High acidity and tannin, the latter softened, but still present. Tannins cut through the fat of the duck and the richness of the glaze beautifully. The finish is long, and iron-y—a bit like licking a copper coin, but in the best way possible.
I think it’s important to celebrate victories, however small, with great wine and good food—this was a life affirming evening.

Nice tasting note. Not everyone rates CF but I think that they offer good value compared to other big names and the wine have imporved over the years as they have rolled back the heavy use of new oak.
