Casa Mono (1*, NYC)

  1. Just some photos from my excellent meal earlier in the day at Casa Mono, a Spanish/Catalan tapas bar near Gramercy Park in NYC which has maintained a single star since 2009. A bit more casual than the usual Michelin place and very tasty. The majority of other folks were ordering the Razor Clams a la Planch (garlic, lemon, parsley) and I know the Creamy Eggs (sea urchin, walnuts, and ancient anchovy oil) and the obligatory Pan con Tomate are both very popular.

The duck ($40) was perfectly cooked and the mushroom/mushroom sauce was a nice earthy accompaniment with the radicchio adding some nice bitterness. Humorously, I mean to order the confit goat but I guess next time.

The fluke crudo ($22) was also tasty with good quality fish and a nice coconut flavor though I expected a bit more citrus and more spice from the leche de tigre. I’d probably get the eggs next time or simply the pan con tomate.

Not pictured- Barrika, an excellent funky Basque Cidre.
