Why don’t we have any halal carts in the city? I had this in NYC and think of it at least once a week lol this is at Mido’s in case you’re interested!

Anyway… That being said, where can I get something like this here?

When I lived in NYC, the OG Halal Guys on 53rd and 6th was the only one I went to (but mostly because I go there after MoMA.) They’ve franchised and have international locations including one in Toronto. I haven’t tried but maybe it’s worth a visit?

We don’t really have a street food culture. Most likely due to the city’s bureaucracy against anything enjoyable for it’s citizens

Overly strict rules for carts here. In fact most cannot be “carts” they must be full-on trucks, which adds a ton to the cost. And they can’t park anywhere near restaurants.

We also don’t have so many people / downtown workers to sustain businesses in general. We have many fewer restaurants than NY which has about 49,000. Toronto has about 9,000 restaurants despite being around 1/3 the population for some reason. Maybe higher costs and less spending power here.

I moved here from NY and the food culture here is so sad though the diversity of it is pretty good and there are gems. But overall eating out here is an expensive hassle. I can’t even get a bagel without traveling far or getting table service (garbage fast food bagels aside). I used to order delivery from nearby carts all the time for all kinds of food – Thai, falafel, bbq – or even call ahead in the morning and reserve a lunch order for popular ones.

Anyway you might want to try OhMyGyro, though their prices skyrocketed and their quality is very inconsistent

Also, no, it is not halal.”

Our shawarma is generally very different from the halal cart style in NYC. Our big chains you’ll see everywhere in the GTA are osmows, lazeez, tahinis and shelbys which prolly make up ~50% of the shawarma market here, not a lot of indie places especially out in the suburbs like NYC has with the carts.

The closest thing I found to NYC style shawarma here is from the halal guys locations (for obvious reasons😂). If u find any lemme know cause i crave that too 😭

The RSPCA argues that killing animals without stunning them causes them to “experience suffering and distress”, and has urged the UK government to ensure all animals are unconscious when slaughtered. Activist group Peta said that although religious slaughter was “probably more humane than any other existing alternative” thousands of years ago, that the “world has changed drastically since then” and the practice leaves animals “terrified” and in “unimaginably agonising” pain when their throats are slit. However, it also argues that no slaughter for meat is humane.

The British Veterinary Association calls for all animals to be effectively stunned before slaughter because of the “pain, suffering and distress” experienced during the cut and bleeding. The Farm Animal Welfare Council says cutting an animal’s throat is “such a massive injury [that it] would result in very significant pain and distress in the period before insensibility supervenes”

We don’t have carts, but personally shahs near Queen and University is a good fix

Shah’s Halal on Duncan is the closest you’ll get to the NYC halal carts.
Toronto has much better shawarma than NYC though.

Shawarma places in legit building are already sketchy enough.

Looks awful. Where’s the food it’s all sauce. Go to lazeez if that’s what you want

We got a Halal Guys. Unlike the NYC location, Toronto’s has never given me the runs.
