
5th February 2025 – (Hong Kong) The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has issued a warning to the public regarding a batch of raw milk cheese imported from France, due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Those in possession of the affected product are urged to cease usage or sale immediately.

A spokesperson for the CFS stated, “We received a notification from the European Commission’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed regarding the recall of this product in France due to potential STEC contamination. Upon notification, the CFS promptly contacted local importers for further investigation. Preliminary findings confirmed that the affected batch had been imported into Hong Kong.”
The importer has complied with CFS directives by halting sales, removing the contaminated product from shelves, and initiating a recall. For further inquiries regarding the recall, consumers can contact the importer’s hotline at 2342 3221 during office hours.
The spokesperson cautioned that STEC can cause gastro-intestinal diseases, typically transmitted through contaminated water or undercooked foods. Symptoms may include intestinal bleeding and severe complications, such as hemolytic uraemic syndrome, in some individuals.
The CFS will notify relevant trade parties about the incident and continue its investigation to ensure appropriate actions are taken.
