Some of you may remember me posting about this a few months back (maybe even last year) about this bottle. Well I finally made the 4 hour drive and pulled the trigger.

1985 Mondavi Cabernet Reserve – Methuselah format

I got it off the original owners who have had it cellared in the same spot for since ‘89 when they brought it home.

The bottle and crate are both in excellent condition, almost no ullage out of the bottle. No signs of egress whatsoever.

Will be opening in a few months for my 40th birthday – stay tuned for tasting notes!

Well done! And happy birth year! Those 80’s Mondavi’s have held up great. Been a few years since I last had the 85 but in that format (and with that provenance!) I bet that’ll be crazy good. Can’t wait to hear about it.

  3. Mondavi will be killer. Love those old Cali’s. Great vintage too.

  4. Really amazing pickup! 6L! That’ll be a fun birthday.

Nice. I’ve still got a ‘74 of mine.

Oh man. I had a birth year of the same wine and it broke. I was heart broken after

Also an 85er. I got Mouton Rothschild in homage to James Bond in what was otherwise the forgettable Diamonds are Forever

    Durn kid 🙂

A friend of mine is a Rutgers professor and he teaches a wine appreciation course to the undergraduates there. He arranges to have their birth year wine at their last class. I asked if I took his class (I am a former RU administrator), if that would extend to me (born in 1959).
