U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to put 200 percent tariffs on alcoholic drinks from the European Union – in response to the block retaliating against previously announced tariffs – would see Greek wine exports take a bit and be more expensive.
The Greek winemakers are said to be trying to accelerate sales to America if Trump makes good with his threat to punish the EU as he is pushing trade wars with U.S. allies, including Canada, as well as other countries such as Mexico.
Sofia Perpera, advisor to the Greek Wine Association (SEO), said, “The US is a key market for Greek wine. We’ve invested heavily, and the return is paying off,” America being a €19 million ($20.73 million) Market, with an average export price of €7 ($7.64) per kilogram, far higher than in Germany.
