A new Greek restaurant has opened in the former Volo space in Charlotte, bringing fresh bites of Greek salad, spanakopita and dolmades, along with an entire lineup of savory and sweet Mediterranean favorites.
Yassou Greek offers recipes that “come from family tradition handed down generation after generation,” co-owner Landa Daglas previously told CharlotteFive. She crafted the menu for the restaurant with co-owner Maria Gabriel and their spouses.
That emphasis on family recipes means you’ll find specialties on the menu of vegetarian, seafood and meat entrees that go beyond typical Charlotte-area Greek restaurants.
Of course, you’ll find tzatziki, but also fava puree made with Santorini fava beans and melitzanosalata made with eggplant, tomato, garlic, scallions, yogurt, olive oil and parsley.

A delectable section of the menu is devoted to cheese, with saganaki, grilled haloumi and even a Greek cheese platter, served with fresh fruit. Other light options include the seafood selections, such as the North Carolina Black Seabass and Branzino, both served with mixed vegetables.
But there’s plenty of hearty fare to be found, too, with mousaka, mixed grill skewers and surf and turf among the choices. Lamb is also a prominent option, with a lamb burger, lamb chops and the Arni Giouvetsi, which is oven-braised lamb served with orzo.

Save a little room for dessert, with sweet options including baklava, custard-filled galaktompoureko and portokalopita, sweet, orange-soaked cake with a texture reminiscent of tres leches cake.
The decor will look familiar to customers who dined at Volo, but it’s been refreshed with a warmer color scheme and Greek artwork on the walls. There are also a few tables for outdoor seating in warmer weather.

For now, the restaurant is serving dinner only in its soft opening phase, but lunch is in the plans for the future, Daglas said. Reservations are available via Yassou’s website, and its grand opening will be announced soon.
“So far, we’ve had a couple of guests, and every one of them left very satisfied with the food, the great cuisine that we are presenting here in Charlotte, and the service and ambience,” Daglas said.
At Yassou Greek, you’ll find co-owners Maria Gabriel and Landa Daglas welcoming customers and ensuring they’re well taken care of.
