I’ve never tried pecan, my family’s always gone with mesquite for baby seasoning

Am I missing something? Seasoning grates, just like cast iron pans, isn’t about “seasoning” it’s about polymerizing the oils to create a non-stick surface. If you want to impart the flavor of a wood into the foods you cook on the grill, that would involve using said wood while cooking the food. If this is a ritual you have when breaking in a new grill, by all means keep up the tradition, but it ain’t adding flavor to future cooks anymore than waving a wand over a hat actually produces a rabbit from thin air.
