Walter Manzke quoted in NYT article in response to Musk getting ready to enter the restaurant business in LA:

“‘It sounds exciting,” said the chef Walter Manzke, who owns Republique in Los Angeles with his wife, Margarita. “She told me the other day that she wants to buy a Tesla, so I can tell you what side she’s on.”

  1. Appreciate the link. Not gonna lie, this sucks, but there are plenty of other great places for pastry in this city.

Yep came here to share this also.

Just told a few friends who we’ve gone with. Won’t be going there again.

  3. the charge here is that the chef/owner thinks musk’s diner concept ‘sounds exciting’? doesn’t really make an impact in my view of the restaurant.

edit: i hate musk as much / more / and longer than just about anyone in this thread. go to one of the tesla protests, this kind of torches out thing isn’t helping anything.

  4. What a moron. Why would you open your fat mouth and alienate at least half of your clientele? That said, this will go unnoticed by the vast majority of people and likely won’t affect business at Republique at all.

I had lunch there a few weeks ago for the first time in ages. It was fine but honestly nothing to write home about. After reading this I can say with absolutely certainty that I’ll never return.

Fucking paywalls. Does anyone have version of the story that isn’t paywalled?

  6. VegetableStamp

Was going to eat here for my bday, can anyone offer an alternative?

Rare you see a local restaurateur commit business suicide in such a public way

  8. People are really about to stop going to Republique because of 25 words? Do people realize they were like this before that interview. And the amount of businesses everyone raves about in this sub are probably similar. Alot of businesses and business owners that have “disagreeable opinions” is more than you would think. I don’t understand this logic….

And no I didn’t vote for trump and no Im not a republican either.

This sub is so lame, it should be about food. Simple and plain.

  10. RelaxinOften

Very stupid move just from a business standpoint to say this lol.

To all of you complaining about paywalls … please explain why you expect journalism to be free? I’m not a fan of the NYT but they have to fund their operation somehow. Maybe more ads is the answer but people complain about that too.

correct me if I’m wrong – so you’re boycotting a restaurant because the chef’s wife wants to buy a Tesla? you know how idiotic it sounds right? I’ve never eaten at republique so I have no say in how their food is.

like help me understand this logic. is it a matter of principle? like I wanna know what it is about what the chef of republique said that makes you as an individual not want to support their business even though they have zero ties with the other person (I think they have zero ties).

  12. Could someone copy the article so I can get context? Paywall 🙁

  13. ballapeno

Can’t get over how this chef looks like Mr. Potato Head

  14. geekteam6

Maybe first ask the Republique owners about this on Instagram and give them a chance to reply? It’s quite possible that two people who work roughly 80 hours a week on their restaurant aren’t fully versed on current events outside LA.

Incredible self-own. Just needed to keep your mouth shut. Welp, I have finite dining $$$ and now just will spend more elsewhere. I’m sure MAGA mouthbreathers will fill in any losses I create.
