Hamido Seafood offers a trip to the Mediterranean shores of Alexandria, Egypt right here on Ditmars Blvd. in Astoria. Hamido Seafood opened two years ago and is named for a legendary fisherman in Alexandria. Owners Rudy Mansy and Chef Mohamed Abuker welcome you to experience the luxury of such fine fish and seafood at very reasonable prices.
Summer is the perfect time to visit Hamido Seafood with its lovely outdoor patio painted with a mural of the seashore. Inside, the cool dining room has a nautical themed décor that leads to the star of the show…the fish! Hamido’s slogan is “We Sea-Food Differently,” and this is so true, as they have a unique ordering system. Simply step up to the ice-chilled display case showing all the catches of the day. Choose among whole branzino, striped bass, red snapper, salmon fillet, porgy, jumbo shrimp, plump scallops, calamari, clams, octopus, and huge lobster for your main course. Then, tell Chef Mohamed how you’d like it prepared. You can have your fresh seafood baked with herbs, fried until golden and crunchy, or simply grilled with fine olive oil and lemon. Egyptian style seafood bake called “Singari” is prepared with tomato, red pepper, onion, and herbs, and the open kitchen prepares it right on the spot.
Grab a table number, sit at one of the clean, comfortable tables and relax while your fish is being prepared. Lovely servers Valentina and Elly help diners choose among the many side dishes at Hamido. Choices include Hamido salad with cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion and dill, juicy beet salad, classic babaganoush, sesame tahini, seasoned rice, garlic eggplant, roasted lemon potatoes, or waffle fries. These dishes are perfect for sharing along with the fluffy, warm pita bread served with them. A pitcher of water with slices of lime and sprigs of fresh mint is cool and refreshing. Other non-alcoholic beverages are available too or you may BYOB. We sampled the juicy, grilled black tiger shrimp, available on their own, or in combination with grilled calamari and two side dishes for just $15.99. Diners nearby were sharing a platter of mouth-watering fried calamari and shrimp that looked tempting.
My enthusiastic friend and I shared a whole red snapper, grilled to perfection, served on a shiny banana leaf, and split open for easy sharing and eating. The flaky fish melted in our mouths and was supremely fresh. We chose babaganoush, beet salad, and lemon potatoes and savory rice with our meal and felt like we were on vacation as the summer breezes blew around us. Hamido serves up a generous platter of linguine with white clam sauce, or with shrimp and scallops in a zesty tomato sauce too ($15.99).
At lunchtime, the fried fish filet sandwich with chipotle mayo and waffle fries hits the spot, as does a juicy salmon burger, or crunchy, fried shrimp with tartar sauce, chipotle sauce, lettuce and tomato piled on a soft hero. Hamido Seafood has a quick and economical lunch special for just $16.99 served Monday to Saturday from 12-4pm, dine in only, and you can try the Hamido seafood pizza with your favorite treats from the sea.
Hamido Seafood is open seven days a week from noon-10pm (last order at 9:30pm). Dine inside, outside or order for takeout from Seamless, Grubhub, Uber Eats, or DoorDash.
