Flavia of Flavia’s Kitchen in South Lamar was killed by a drunk driver late Monday night. RIP Flavia, you made the BEST damn tacos in South Lamar ❤️ You will be missed. The cost of a safe Uber ride home is nothing compared to the price of someone’s life. Don’t fucking drink and drive.

Horrific. Driving impaired is one of the most selfish things a person can do. I hope they throw the book at her. RIP Flavia.

Is it really that hard to call a fucking Uber? Especially when you’re planning to spend the evening on 6th Street of all place?

RIP Flavia. This is such a tragedy.

Oh no, so fkng heartbreaking and senseless. I’ve never been, but I have to cry reading the 100+ five star reviews-there wasn’t a word against her or her beautiful food.

  4. I used to talk to her like five times a week… I… She was like my Mexican momma who would check in on me…

Rest in peace Flavia. I can’t believe this, she was such a kind person. If anyone knows of any ways to support her family or give condolences, please let me know.

I miss Austin but I don’t miss it’s absolutely fucking senseless culture around drunk driving.

It seems “normal” to austinites because it’s so prevalent. But it’s *not* normal. It’s not ok.

Life is hard enough. Why risk the senseless and pointless death of others.

When you crack open that third drink, you’re getting an Uber. Just fucking do it, you fucking asshole. Yes. You.

This won’t stop until these murderers start getting real prison time. So sad and unnecessary in every way.

On average 37 people die every day in the US due to drunk drivers. That’s like a 737 crashing every few days. Somehow we’re just numb to the carnage when it comes to cars though.

Austin is the alcoholism capital of the country AND the number one city for DWIs.

And law enforcement does nothing about it. They refuse to do DWI checkpoints and wouldn’t even send a cop to arrest the drunk driver who slammed into my vehicle twice.

Absolutely heartbreaking. Just moved into the neighborhood and have been there several times over the last couple of months. She was a lovely lady, always incredibly kind and clearly cared about her customers and her family that were always there. I’ll remember her kindness that came with her food. After my first time there, she always remembered that I’m one of those soapy cilantro people and made sure I didn’t have any on my order. Not a big deal to most, but it showed how she cared. RIP Flavia, you’ll be missed.

Start calling out anyone around you who is thinking about driving impaired.

You’re a big dumb bitch if you drive drunk.

Fuck this sucks. The tacos were always fresh, cheap and served with a huge smile.

Flavia was a kind soul. The food was always great and she was always so nice

  14. I hope the rest of her life is ruined one way or the other

I’m devastated by this news. I would get tacos from Flavia regularly and she was such a wonderful person. I can’t really comprehend that I won’t see her cheerful face any more at the window of her food truck

I loved her truck, we were friends and her daughters were always so nice. She will be missed.

The problem, like most, is systemic. We live in a place where partying is one of our top attractions yet we lack reasonable public transportation, unsafe and unfree parking (you know if you need to leave your car overnight because you tied one on), and no incentives for ride sharing. Companies like Uber and Lyft could partner with local spots to provide discounts for riders who patronize their establishments. Oh yeah, and we have a police force who not so quiet quit years ago. Even if more APD officers were out on patrol, and were able to catch more offenders, it still wouldn’t be enough to deter poor decision making. There are many issues Austin has that need to be addressed and I wish the powers that be would make this one a priority. One life lost to drunk driving is one too many.

Drunk driving is one of the most selfish thing a person can do. I have cut a person out of my life because she still drinks and drives. RIP this poor lady. The drunk driver can go to hell.

Flavia is the second pedestrian I know to have been killed by a drunk driver in Austin. Please think of others more and drive with care for your community.

I’m so sad about every part of this. Flavia’s is one of my favorite food trucks. All of their food is amazing, priced like old Austin, and every time I ordered there I just felt like family. When they moved to South Lamar it became within walking distance for me and I remember vividly being so happy because I couldn’t literally think of another place I’d rather have closer.

Over the past year the new location then became a family favorite spot, especially since we could walk my dog Chewie over there. Often on walks my dog will abruptly stop when encountering a sewer grate. Anyways, on one of many walks over there I was a little hangry, and annoyed at an abrupt sewer grates stop slowing our progress to delicious food. I yelled at her “Chewie, tacos!” as if it was a command. Chewie then bravely walked over the grate and we arrived at Flavia’s a minute later. On future trips over the months, I’d say tacos as we approached the grate and she’d walk right over without a second thought, even to the point of running and knew bites of delicious tacos were seconds away from her. Anywhere we go now I can say tacos, regardless of what food we’re getting, and my dog knows that’s the secret phrase that amazing food is about to be eaten by the full family.

I don’t know why I’m sharing this exactly. Maybe just hoping the family comes across it and can enjoy the story, or maybe for others grieving just to have a connection knowing someone else out there felt like it was more than just a food truck to them. You’ll be missed so much Flavia, and I hope your dream lives on.

Would be nice to see a picture of Flavia and not the woman who killed her 😕

This is what Texas should be focused on instead of THC bans. Driving here is so dangerous

  23. This is horrible
Also, for those those that don’t already know this. I recommend to pull over on the side of I 35 for any reason if you can avoid it. The accident in north Austin also was from two stopped cars. Especially around 2am is not a good time to stop on the shoulder. RIP.

  24. Smoke_thatskinwagon

We need affordable and accessible public transport. For more than just downtown. Not at all trying to justify drunk driving but to get to downtown from north Austin can sometimes cost $80 one way on uber.

🥲🥲smh feel bad for the poor girls she left behind. Orphans now. She was a family friend and would love to frequent her spot. She had a lot going for her in the competition scene.
