With every order of hummus comes four pieces of fresh pita, pita chips, or both. // Photo by Sophia Lail.
Recently, I’ve been thinking about what I consider staples in my life. Every time I open Youtube, I’m met with a video posted by some pop culture publication interviewing what feels like every celebrity about their food favorites and household staples. Erewhon smoothies, Manuka honey, niche vegetarian pizza from a celebrity chef owned restaurant in Santa Monica. Just about what you’d expect.
My staples look a bit different. Homemade matcha lattes? Yup. Boursin cheese? Absolutely. There’s also another thing I keep going back to: a heaping serving of Meddys hummus accompanied by their pita.
Meddys, a Mediterranean restaurant turned chain hailing from Wichita, KS, has taken over the metro by storm. It’s so good that I would add it to the list of something for Kansans to be proud of. Put Meddys on the list right next to Eisenhower.
The hummus is incredibly smooth, with a perfect tahini to chickpea ratio. Grocery store hummus tends to be a little gritty, but Meddys has clearly put in the work to get the perfect consistency and texture. Topped with spices, herbs, olive oil, and chickpeas, it’s beautiful both on the inside and out. Did I nearly eat the whole thing despite buying it to keep in my fridge for a week? Maybe.
Their pita stands out on its own, as it is always made fresh and served warm. It has a slightly tough exterior and a warm, doughy interior that soaks up the hummus. Every order of hummus has the option of coming with fresh pita, pita chips, or both.
You know how sometimes celery serves solely as a vehicle to shovel heaps of ranch in your mouth? That isn’t the case here. The pita is equally as great without the hummus, however they do bring out the best in each other.
Alongside this staple, they serve a variety of Mediterranean favorites, such as falafels, shawarmas, baklava, and more.
Meddys has locations across the metro, these locations being in Brookside, Prairie Village, Liberty, and Lenexa. For their menu, locations, and other information, you can visit their website.
