Decades ago, the French compiled an official list of the nation’s most beautiful villages (of course they did). Established in 1982, Les Plus Beaux Villages de France includes 156 exquisite hamlets – and Les Baux-de-Provence, in southern France, is one of them.
A tiny medieval citadel clinging to a rocky outcrop 244 metres above sea level, Baux overlooks the Val d’Enfer, or Valley of Hell, said to have been in Dante’s mind when he composed Inferno.
