A French wine bar has opened at 108 West 81st Street (between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues).

Jerome Mathieu, who tells us he’s worked in the industry for thirty years, first leased the space with his partner about two years ago, finally opening Le Vin Coeur (which translates to “heart wine”) last weekend.

Previously home to Cook Travel, a travel agency, Mathieu tells us they had quite a few issues and delays with the build-out, since they had to fully convert the space into a bar with a kitchen.

Reviews are positive so far, with early patrons praising the friendly service, cozy vibes and extensive wine selection, which includes French reds, whites, rosés, champagnes and sparkling wines.

The food menu offers a variety of small plates including cheese and charcuterie boards, foie gras and French fries with olive oil. There’s a French onion soup along with two salads–an organic spinach salad and the Salade Landaise with “duck magret, bacon bits, gizzards, country style ham, cherry tomatoes, foie gras, corn, egg, croutons with a vinaigrette dressing.”

Additional options include beef tartare, croque monsieur, a French mac & cheese and two desserts–profiteroles and chocolate cake.

Mathieu tells us the menu will change a bit, but it will remain small plates, as everything is homemade and the kitchen is very small.
