Hey guys!

I am planning to DIY a pretty big kamado project this summer and was wondering if there are any good ways to divert the smoke away from the grill. The grill itself will stand roughly where it is now in the picture, except a little closer to the edge. I plan to build a long table with countertop around it, but I need to divert the smoke above the roof, since the sitting area is close. What options are there? Do you think flexible air ducts attached to the top vent would work? Any tips appreciated !

I have a similar patio and it’s not an issue. Most of the time there’s not a lot of smoke.

If you add a duct to the exhaust that’s going to significantly change how the kamado works, as it will create much more draw. Plus you’ll have a hard time adjusting the top vent.
So if it’s an issue for you then I suggest you build a dedicated kamado area outside the covered patio.

Mount a fan on the roof beam to blow the smoke out sideways. Don’t point it at the smoker or you will have temperature control problems. Use as you normally would and blow the smoke out.

My neighbour has an upside-down metal bucket attached to a 2 story aluminium flexible hose up the side of his house. Very get-together it works. There is a lot of draw even in little wind. Helps getting it started but makes temp control more complex.
If you can get away without such a ‘fix’ then i would. If you really need smoke ‘extraction’ then something similar might be an option but it looks like crap.
I’d try and work with the wind you have, I have my kamado on the side of my house where there is a natural updraft, maybe blocking off parts of your veranda might be an option.

I don’t think it will change anything, but your third picture is not accurate. With the lots open, you won’t have smoke coming out of the lid at a 45°angle and then pivoting straight up. The smoke won’t come out of the lids at all, it will come off the uncovered grill and go straight up.

Even if some somehow gathered enough to come out of the lid, it would still go straight up immediately.
