Sooo, I bought some ground beef a few weeks back and haven't gotten around to cooking it. I was planning to cook it tonight, but it's looking like this. Is it still safe to eat?

The two pictures are with the flash and without, since the lighting in my apartment is yellowish

I’d say no, but your nose is your guide on this. If it smells rancid, get rid of it.

The color isn’t too alarming, that it’s been sitting in your fridge for a month is. I’d pass.

the nose always knows – smell it.

Have a sniff, it looks a bit oxidised, was it frozen?

No, ground beef lasts like *maybe* 3 days in the fridge. More surface area, more contact = more bacteria. I grind my own meat and aim to use it within 1 day or less.

It appears to be gas packed at a processing plant. The gas helps to extend shelf life. It looks questionable. You will have to do a smell test to decide. If it is a really strong smell then toss it. If it’s the typical blood/ burger smell you should be okay if it has not been temperature abused. If you do decide to use it, make sure you cook it too 160*~165* or more .

Butcher here – sniff test is the best but also, some claim you can eat green beef but personally i wouldn’t. Also that looks worse than green. Like, it wouldn’t kill you but you’d probably get sick and there’s the parasite thing.

Personally, i would not eat that. Also side note yes i throw away green beef and anything that makes my case look bad. I do not take any chances and care for the health of my customers.

As others are saying, use the sniff test. It will smell off if it’s bad and should be tossed. Definitely cook it fully if you use it to kill any bacteria. Ground beef goes bad faster than regular meat because it has much larger surface area to collect bacteria from going through the grinder.

Don’t eat it even if it doesn’t smell.

    Smell and aesthetic check always.

  10. I’ve had meat like that, ate it and nothing happened to me. You should definitely smell it though

Ground beef is where you typically find E. coli in beef. I wouldn’t risk it. I’ve been known to trim off oxidation on steaks or roasts if it’s not too deep. But ground beef is not worth the risk

If it smells a little bit sour at all, just throw it away, but if it smells like normal meat, it smells like normal meat

As long as you cook it, should be fine.

Just warn your friends and neighbors first. Eating this is how the zombie apocalypse starts

That looks fine to me. I will still eat it.

Bro is trying to cook last months ground beef

Not really but technically if you cook it long enough at a high enough heat it’ll be fine. If making hamburger helper or whatever you should be okay if careful. If making something like burgers or meatballs/meatloaf better rethink your plans.

No. If it were a couple of days after the best by date I would go off the smell test, but that’s two weeks past prime. Not worth the risk.

I would have in more desperate times, but that’s dog food these days. If it’s this or go hungry, just cook the shit out of it, drain the fat, and season heavily. Possibly add a gravy and simmer AFTER it’s cooked.

You can also freeze it for 4 weeks prior to cooking the shit out of it to be extra safe. Very few pathogens can survive that process.

Be wary of eating old meat in general. My great grandmother nearly died from eating old, previously cooked meals. She threw nothing away because she lived through the great depression. She even washed and reused her aluminum foil. Pancreatitis is a hell of a disease.

Honestly it will probably smell foul after you open it but even if it didn’t I wouldn’t risk it. Ground beef has a much higher risk of contamination.

Don’t do it. Be aware that there are plenty of pathogens that will still make you sick even if you cook them.

Thank you everyone for your responses!

The sniff test tried and true. As soon as I opened the packaging, I caught a strong whiff of old garbage

While it still looked *possibly* edible, I will not be taking that risk today. Moneys tight, but not THAT tight. It’s a shame to see food go to waste, but it’s too late for this one
