One Morgan County restaurant is giving back to the community this holiday season.
Bank Street Grill plans to host a free Christmas dinner for the homeless population in Decatur.
It’s something the owners said has been weighing heavy on their hearts.
“It was just in our heart that our community has blessed us so much since we took over this place that we’ve got to give back to the community,” Melissa Staten, one of the owners of Bank Street Grill said.
She said the support from the community inspired them to host a free Christmas dinner for the city’s homeless population, complete with all the fixings.
“We are going to have mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green beans, breads, cookies,” Staten said. “It’s going to be the hot meal they leave here with.”
Staten said it is important to take care of the less fortunate, especially around the holidays.
“People forget about them at Christmastime,” Staten said. “They need love too. They need to remember that we haven’t forgot about them.”
But it’s not just about the people who will attend the dinner.
“It’s gonna mean a lot to us,” Timothy Staten, one of the owners of Bank Street Grill, said. “We just wanna, like I said, help people out, make sure everybody gets something out of this holiday season, number one and just be able to feed people and give them something to keep them warm and stuff like that is going to mean to the world to us you know.”
But the Statens also have some help.
Javier Castillo is the area manager for Adams Beverages. He is helping to provide not only free drinks, but also items to go in grab bags for those who attend.
He said your luck can change in a split second, so it’s important to help when you can.
“This time of year we are blessed and other people are not,” Castillo said. “We can be in the same position as some of these homeless you know any little fallback so the fact that we can help out, we love doing it especially in our own community and stuff.”
