MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Students at NMU and some Marquette residents now know more about French baking, thanks to a seminar held Thursday afternoon.
Baker Lisette LaFave says one of the reasons she loves her work is the joy of teaching others how to bake new and exciting things.
She says her mission at NMU Thursday was to reveal the easy techniques behind French baking.
“I think a lot of times, people look at cooking but especially baking as, ‘Oh, there is so much math and science and I don’t know what I’m doing,’” LaFave said. “But I taught myself when I was like 15 years old how to make Macaroons.”
LaFave is a self-employed baker who wholesales her products out of BabyCakes in Marquette.
She bakes things like baguettes, croissants and macaroons.
NMU Senior Charlie Trippel is in the French program. He says the event is centered around bringing the community together.
“It can get a lot of people interested in French,” Trippel said. “But it is also just a great way to talk about some culture regarding food and baking and everything. I’m just excited that there is some light being shined on some French stuff.”
Other students enrolled in cooking classes were also present and say they were eager to expand their knowledge of baking.
“We are learning about food right now,” NMU Senior Addi Zaleski said. “We are on a cheese unit and we are on a baking unit next, so we figured we would go see the baking unit that we were doing.”
“We are doing a lot of history on baking and different countries like France, Germany and all that stuff,” NMU Senior Natalie Roubal said. “We are trying different things and going to different places and hearing what people have to say.”
LaFave says now, people can try cooking something new with ingredients they already have.
“You don’t have to just make the same thing that you see in the store,” LaFave said. “You can do something cool with it.”
LaFave says she hopes she has inspired more people to dive into the art of French baking.
