HONOLULU (Island News) — A restaurant bill was signed into law allowing outdoor dining to become a permanent feature across Oahu.
Bill 1 (2025), which was signed into law by Mayor Blangiardi, was initially a pilot program in 2022. During its trial, 15 businesses were granted permits to service outdoor dining to guests.
In addition to the first batch of businesses, more eateries are now allowed to expand their seating onto sidewalks, parklets and other designated public spaces.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi is expected to offer his approval for outdoor dining options on Oahu.
“Our outdoor dining program has been a no-brainer for us, because it offers residents and visitors a unique and enjoyable way to experience our island’s beautiful year-round weather,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “With this new law, we are reinforcing our commitment to a vibrant and dynamic dining culture. I want to thank the City Council for recognizing the value of this program and helping to make it permanent.”
This bill ventures out to boost business for local restaurants and the initiative has had bouts of success since the program began. Public spaces will continue to be revamped to offer a quality experience for residents while enjoying all kinds of ono food.
In advancing Honolulu’s vibrant dining culture, health and safety measures are considered with the use of sidewalks and parks for restaurant service. The bill has also cooked up other benefits such as reduced crime and economic support for local businesses.
