Ramadan Series Episode 5: “ZAATAR MANAKISH BUNS”
Ingredients:
• rectangular puff pastry sheets (6×10 inches each)
• ¼ cup garlic tomato chili sauce
¼ cup za’atar spice mix
¼ cup olive oil
• 1 egg (for egg wash)
Sesame seeds or nigella seeds (for garnish,
optional)
Za’atar Mixture Ingredients:
• ¼ cup dried thyme (or a mix of thyme and oregano)
2 tbsp sumac (adds tangy flavor)
2 tbsp sesame seeds
¼ cup olive oil (to make it spreadable)
Instructions:
•. Preheat Oven: Set to 200°C (392°F).
•. Mix za’atar with olive oil in a bowl.
Place one puff pastry sheet on a baking surface.
• Spread garlic tomato chili sauce evenly.
• Apply za’atar mixture over the sauce.
• Cover with the second puff pastry sheet and press gently.
Pinch and seal the edges of the pastry.
Cut into long strips using a sharp cutter.
Take each strip, roll and twist it into a bun shape.
Brush with beaten egg for a golden shine.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until puffed and golden
brown.
• Sprinkle sesame or nigella seeds if desired.
• Enjoy warm with tea, labneh, or a yogurt dip!
