For $200, doesn't seem bad.

On that narrow caster base this thing looks like a serious tip hazard. I would not feel safe filling this thing with fire.

That’s an interesting concept. They sell the door, stands and flange at I think most hardware stores. The intended purpose is a wood burning stove for heat in a garage. But I’m guessing this works.

Haven’t seen this style for around 20 years

How much more is a new offset? Personally I’m not a fan of picking up stuff like this.

I’m sure it’s fine but I’m always reminded of what happened with one of my shooting buddies. His uncle *use to* give us tons of free reloaded ammo. Part of why he could reload the ammo so cheaply was that he would collect scrap lead and melt them down in old cast iron skillets to make bullets for his reloading supplies. That uncle passed away a few yearrrrs back. I asked about what they did with all that stuff and apparently his aunt sold it at a garage sale. I have no idea if she knew what those cast iron pots/pans were being used for. Just as important, I have no idea if the buyer knew.

I know it’s metal and the heat cycles should’ve cleaned any chemicals out by now but when it comes to feeding my family and friends I tend to not go that route. Combined with all the other “What If’s” (are the weld strongs, is it going to tip etc), it’s just easier and more piece of mind to me to pick up an extra shift or two (or 3) and buy it new.

I wish the bottom was another cooking chamber and it had a firebox off to the side.

I used to have this same setup, only cost me $55 to build. Used it to cater a wedding.

I built one like this with slight variations

I’ve seen double barrel wood stoves used to heat up shops built like this. A smoker would be interesting. I wonder if the temperature would be a challenge to control considering the firebox is directly underneath the smoke chamber.
