Lacks the obligatory banana for scale… Sardines can reach a length of over 25cm/10 inches. Subtract head and tail fin and you get a piece that barely fits a can.
Usually smaller fish are canned. I’m not sure what size is considered “perfect”, but sometimes you can see the size indicated on the can.

That’s a big ol’ deen

Big ones, small ones, some as big as your hear!
kabekew
Usually they call the bigger ones herring and smaller ones sardines, but they’re from the same family of fish.

Atlantic chub mackerel is often packaged as sardines.

UPDATE: I did it! My first sardines!
In hindsight, It was maybe better to have two chonkies than 5/6 small, and maybe, to follow your advice and go with spicy tomato Angelo Parodi.
I cannot fathom how some of you guys rawdog it without crackers and chili sauce/tabasco. They were fairly scaly but not awfully fishy; anyhow, it was kinda hard: just like the first cigarettes, whisky and anise liquors. All things that I despised, at first..
Thank you for you help!

That’s one chonky deen.
I tend to fillet mine and have a good look before I eat them, big deens like these make it easy and satisfying

Sardines are made from different kinds of fish. I don’t like the big kind, preferring instead brisling sardines. King Oscar has some brisling sardine varieties.

Id try a different can before you decide not liking them. These aren’t your average type

Probably pilchards. I prefer smaller, but pilchards are still ok. OP since it seems like you actually liked these ones, you’ll probably really like smaller species. Try sprats/brislings.

Everyone has their own taste that’s for sure. I avoid sprats and brislings unless for a recipe and exclusively seek out pilchards for regular eating. One fish per cracker does me right.

What did the label said…show the can. Otherwise stop it

Sometimes they’re just huge tbh
They’re fine. Looks like what I get when I buy from Trader Joe’s.
Just a chonker
“Sardines” aren’t really a single species of fish https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sardine
