about to pop this to celebrate my wife getting her Spanish residency, then I was confronted with this – how do I open it ?

It’s an agrafe closure! Super easy to open, make sure you have a hand on the cork and just use a butter knife or something small and slim between the staple and the bottle. Pry the staple end away from the glass and it will come right off.
Or just YouTube it. Enjoy!

You need to pry the metal strap off (just stick something between it and the cork and twist) and then you pull it like a regular champagne cork (hold the cork and twist the bottle).

Congrats to your wife! And see other comments for actual advice 🙂

Such a cool closure! I would keep it. As others have said…..keep your hand on the cork. And point it away from anything breakable.

Which wine is this?
(You’ve presumably succeeded in opening it by now.)
Tile saw with a glass blade. Put your mouth over the drain hose from the saw bed

I remember the first time I saw a closure like this and was super intimidated. But in reality, it’s super easy. Just pry with a wine key knife, keeping your finger on the cork; voilà!

Butter knife works.
The ‘official’ tool is a degrateur.
