Got these as a gift from a family member who just returned from Japan. What are they?
How do I eat them? They look like maybe they should go over rice? Or is it a soup base? I really have no idea. Using Google lens translate wasn’t that helpful. Thank you!

I think it’s a variety set of pickles and umeboshi plums.

They look like pickled foods. Like you eat as a side dish.

It is Tsukemono (Pickled vegetables), often eat with white rice.
Can you not just ask the person who gave it to you?

Ooooh looks like various pickled veggies! I get the purple packet all the time its super yummy. Has shiso in it i think, but its mostly cucumber and ginger. Never had the others tho….. you can eat them over rice, though sometimes ill eat them by themselves. You can add them to a cheese board too, or toss them in a noodle soup

These are Kyoto pickles. Use them as a side dish, eaten as is with a bowl of rice on the side (but a little at a time, they’re very strongly flavored).
Red one is shibazuke, usually eggplant, cucumbers, red shiso, and myoga (young ginger).
Green one is suguki, a type of turnip (pickles with the greens).
Yellow one is burdock root (this one might be sweet)
Orange one is shiso (the flower part) and daikon.

Lucky you, I want them 💕

I love these! Man i’m so envious…
They keep really well in the fridge and last a very long time. I like to add them to every meal so every meal has some kinda vegetable. They have a strong flavor though so might not want to add too much.

Variety of tsukemono for sure. My Japanese is way rusty, but up top murasaki just means purple, so not sure if it’s a pickled purple yam or umeboshi. I think yellow is burdock, the orange label is called white something, it’s either white mushrooms or pickled in white miso (miso pickles are amazing). The good news is all tsukemono are delicious: make some sushi rice and try little dabs of each alongside the rice.
If you want google translate to help, turn the packages 90 clockwise before taking a pic.

Put them over white Japanese rice. Don’t forget to refrigerate them after opening. Nishiri makes excellent quality tsukemono!

Yes, tsukemono. A side dish of vegetables. Think of it like “kimchi.” pickled and salty, but jummy.

Pickles like this are usually just served as an aperitif or side dish. When you sit down at a restaurant you’ll often get a small bowl of some pickles while you wait for your meal. Or they are served with your main dish as a sort of palate cleanser you can eat in between bites to get some acidity and reset your palate which improves your enjoyment of the dish.
They are not a main dish sort of thing. You would not usually just put these on some rice and have that as your main meal. You just get small amounts of them as a pop of flavor to complement a larger meal.

Takana zuke is my favorite 😍 (pickled mustard leaves). Menma is good as a side dish, too (not just on ramen).

I’m jealous. I live picked veggies, and umeboshi is one of the best flavors in the world.

[Tsukemono](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukemono) – Japanese preserved vegetables. I don’t see any Umebioshi, the red one looks like [Shibazuke](https://www.seriouseats.com/guide-japanese-pickles-tsukemono#toc-shibazuke).
