Purchased this can of Patagonia Provisions Spicy Mussels today. First time with this brand but not my first time buying tinned mussels—I’ve never seen this kind of green coloring before. Anyone have any insight into what’s going on here?

The can is best by July 2028 so it shouldn’t be past its prime.

Their innards get a greenish tint from their food sometimes

Mussels are green like that sometimes. Also I just ate a can of these, it’s fine.

Just had the exact tin with the same coloration. I believe it’s just from eating algae or something. It’s fine

I learn something new every day. I would totally toss this out if I saw this. Never knew it could be normal.

It’s normal. The hepatopancreas, kind of a liver and pancreas all in one common to mollusks, imparts that green color when cooked.

Don’t be put off by the green – I would absolutely tear this up.

I haven’t tried these, but my first thought was to ask whether the can “popped” at all when you cracked the seal. If so, good, right? Or maybe it doesn’t matter with this kind of product. Sorry, don’t mean to add nothing but confusion.

    I just ate a tin and it’s definitely 🌶️

  12. Mussels get a lot of algae inside them and that can tint them greenish. It’s normal.

Also TIL Patagonia makes tinned fish

Honestly, whenever I open a tin, I can’t tell if it looks good or not. I just close my eyes and dive in. ☺️
