Ammolite – The Lighthouse Restaurant (**) | Europa-Park Rust, Germany

  1. Ammolite is a restaurant in a lighthouse 500km away from the sea. It also has two Michelin stars.

Why? It belongs to a theme park: Europa-Park. One of the biggest and most famous theme parks in Europe, located in Southern Germany. The restaurant is part of “Hotel Bell Rock”, with a New England Theme. The restaurant is on the ground floor of the lighthouse, the upper floors contain the hotel suites.

I visited Ammolite at the beginning of this year. I wanted to visit the theme park’s indoor waterpark, during the winter months. Out of curiousity I emailed the restaurant asking they had some seatings available. Luckily, they had bar counter seating available, which I gladly took. None of my friends who were to join me in the water park the day after wanted to join, so I went in as a solo diner.

They have 2 menus (“Around the World” and a “Green Forest” vegetarian menu), I opted for the 8-course “Around the World Menu”.

Turns out the bar counter setting was an incredible place for me to be, their bar counter was small (intended for 2 people) but offered a great view into the restaurant and their serving/pass table where they put together all the dishes. I love open/semi-open kitchens, a visit to Cocina Hermanos Torres back in 2021 actually got me into fine dining in the first place.

Overall, it was an incredible experience for me. Food was amazing and very tasty. I never got bored for one second as I could watch the kitchen staff put together the dishes all the time, and the waiters getting all the dishes out to the tables. Waiters were also friendly. They and the head chef came to me to the bar counter for a quick chat from time to time… Wine pours were also quite generous, I was pretty buzzed towars the end of the meal. They offered me to change seating from the bar counter to a proper table, when one reservation showed up, but I declined.

Kitchen counter was the place for me to be.

Can absolutely recommend the restaurant, if you’re in the area or planning to visit Europa-Park or Rulantica sometime.
