Hi everyone- I want to attempt to make this style of cake for my son’s birthday in a few weeks. I don’t think I’ll be able to do the piping completely freehand without making a bunch of errors. Any tips on how I could plan out the placement of everything or somehow sketch out the objects on the cake before actually doing the piping? I’ve drawn out a plan on a 10 inch round of parchment paper but how might I transfer this accurately to the cake? Thank you!

I know a lot of people hate fondant, but I’ve had success replicating a painted image, like 2’x3′ large, by rolling a sheet of thin fondant out on an empty table..putting parchment over it, overlaying the image/art print on top of the parchment…then drawing/tracing the image..and indending the lines through the print/parchment/into the fondant. Then basically colouring in the lines.
I got a ton of detail after that, hand painting and adding the shades and things needed, after the basic outline, placement, etc was etched into the fondant.
Less than ideal- you can use tissue paper over things like cookies, then draw through it with edible markers..and some of the lines./colors go onto the food beneath.
Otherwise theres the techniques of tracing it onto parchment (print your image off, put it on a window (backwards), put parchment over that image, and trace it with edible marker.., then piping the design onto that..then applying the sheet/design onto a cake top. From there you can fix and touch up the design. I’ve seen lots of tiktoks and shorts of people doing that with images, so you could YouTube that also.
Good luck and remember you can always touch it up after, that’ll be what makes and breaks it.
It helps to chill the iced cake before hand and then you can use a toothpick to lightly sketch out your design before piping it on. Also if you chill the cake before piping the design you can wipe it off or pick it off without it smearing into the icing underneath if that makes sense!
Good luck. Let us know how it went and your progress. A pic or two of the finished cake too, please
