I actually want it at 260. So that’s all that matters but what’s the deal? I used the Genius once before and it was consistently 25 degrees higher than dome but since it was consistent I could account for it.
This time my pit temps have been all over the place (at one point reading over 500F), but my dome temp has stayed consistent at 260. So I know the problem is with the Genius probe. As you can see in my picture I placed it as close to center as possible while also keeping it away from direct heat.
It’s only my second time using it so do I just have a bad probe or is this normal?

Not doing anything wrong. Your genius thermometer is a lot closer to the fire.
You have to learn to work with those differences in readings and favor one over the other depending on what you’re cooking.
Clean your thermometer stem.
Have you calibrated the dome thermometer in a pan of boiling water, adjusting for altitude?
You’re reading the temp at the grill grates. Like others have said that is much closer to the fire and warmer than the top of the dome.
If you stick your egg genius probe onto your dome thermometer they will be much closer to each other. I would do that and pick one to pay attention to and not second guess it.
You need to update the app. 95% of all egg genius issues are the app not updated.
You should be good after that
I always connect my egg genius thermometer to the lead of the dome thermometer. It always stays pretty much in sync with the dome temp. That said, make sure you tap on your dome thermometer. I often find that mine gets “stuck” and if I tap on it a couple of times the temp will rise up to the real temp.
Sounds about right, your egg genius is correct and your dome temp is off. The day I got signals it totally changed my success with slow cooking.
I can’t quite make out your probe in the clip. It looks off. Like the probe is on the grate? It should look [like this](https://thermapen.co.uk/2377-square_large_default/spare-probe-clip.jpg)
I wouldn’t think you’d had that much difference, plus my dome runs hotter than my grate when indirect…
