Bulloch County farmer’s livelihood threatened by wells for Hyundai

Ray Davis is the 7th generation in his family to farm land in Bulloch County. Proposed wells for Hyundai pose a threat to future irrigation of crops.

Vidalia onions are on their way to grocery stores, farmers’ markets and restaurants as I write this dining update and the sweet onion season gets underway. The Vidalia Onion Festival kicks off April 22, and if you have never trekked the two-hour drive to Toombs County, make it a point this year and buy a 5-pound bag straight from a farmer. We will talk more about Vidalias next week.

Meanwhile, here are some dining updates in and around Savannah.

Easter service

Old Savanah City Mission reminds us of the reason for this Easter season with both a breakfast and dinner service for hundreds of expected guests. The breakfast will include bacon, eggs and hashbrowns, and the dinner menu boasts of barbecued chicken, green beans, man ‘n’ cheese and more.

The Mission is seeking both financial and culinary donations as well as blankets and gently loved clothing to aid those who need a helping hand up. Financial donations to support Old Savannah City Mission can be made at oldsavannahcitymission.org/donate/. Clothing and food donations can be dropped off at 2414 Bull St.

Alright, Alright, Alright

The new Green Jeans cocktail at Bonefish Grill, 5500 Abercorn St. (in Twelve Oaks Plaza), has the vivid chartreuse hue of a spinach smoothie with the shoulder-numbing effects of a margarita. It looks almost healthy, right?

The springy sipper was born of a partnership between Texas power couple, Matthew and Camila McConaughey, and their Pantalones Organic Tequila with Bonefish Grill, the nationwide seafood-focused chain. Head in for some Bang Bang Shrimp with a Green Jeans chaser, or make one (or two) at home as they were kind enough to share the recipe.

Green Jeans Cocktail

Serves 1

1 ½ ounces Pantalones Blanco Tequila

1 ounce lemon juice

1 ounce simple syrup

½ ounce orange liqueur

½ ounce lime juice

2 teaspoons matcha powder

Pack a pint glass 3⁄4 full of ice and add all ingredients.Shake 10 times vigorously with a shaker tin.Pour into rocks glass, then top with ice.Garnish with lemon and lime wheels.

Cheers!
