As the title says I know nothing about wine and need advice.

My friend recently took a couple of wine tasting courses so I guess she knows her stuff. I’m trying to buy a bottle for her as a wedding gift. In the shop they told me this is a nice one for a special occasion, esp. if the couple wants to save it for a special occasion and open it for their anniversary.

Would you agree or were they just trying to upsell me? It was £70.

Other bottles they recommended:
– Ca dei Maghi Amarone 2016. £60
– Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon 2011. £65

I think it would make a great present for them to open on the fifth anniversary.

All of those are good gifts and good recommendations!

haven’t heard of the producer, but for a wedding gift i would just buy champagne

I have not had that wine or that producer… BUT €70 for 1er Cru Vosne seems like a steal at that price.

Hopefully the happy couple likes Pinot Noir!

Yes, it is. Though, without knowing this person’s tastes, it’s hard to know for sure.

I love Burgundy, so if you gave me this bottle on my wedding day, I’d be very grateful!

  6. Yes. This is an indredible winemaker, visited this place twice. Very oldschool Burgundy, but I love that style. And a 1er Cru Vosne at 70 quid is a bargain.

Little known producer, but very good, with prices that make him a very good qpr today. Extremely age worthy wines, Gilles always tries to have pretty high maturity while keeping elegance, and I’m sure 2017 would have made a very pleasant result.

Superb wine and great price. Would be lovely for the next five to seven years maybe longer

I would say yes. VR premier cru is always at a nice level of quality. 17 not a strong vintage, but that just means they should enjoy it earlier.

Blimey – good wine shop for that quality / price – assuming not in London?

Yes, Remoriquet is very good. Were I presented with those three choices, I’d have chosen this one as well.

1er Cru for that price is fantastic and I would be thrilled to receive that bottle as a gift

  13. Thank you everyone, you have been really helpful!

I wrote down names of wines my friend mentioned on social media and the shop manager said the couple should like this, but since this was my first time buying ‘nice’ wine, I was a bit intimidated by the experience & price tag.

It sounds like this is a good gift for a reasonable price – I will go buy it tomorrow morning!

Is this a Burgundy Pinot Noir? Premier cru quality level from the village of Vosney-Romanee? Im learning to read French labels.

Ps. This will likely be a great gift classy stuff.

I love this producer. A really small family, and absolutely delicious wine

The Boekenhoutskloof Cab Sav is one of the best Cab Savs in the western cape. The 2011 Vintage is legendary. That would make an amazing gift if I’d received that.

It’s an excellent price for the bottle. In FR a vosne romanee would go for between 100€-150€

If you gave me that bottle as a wedding gift, I might name my first child after you. Or maybe a pet.

  19. Steamed-Hams

I’d be extremely happy to receive that as a gift.
