Welsh rugby fans have been left in stitches after one of them tried to order four baguettes but ended up with 14 in a French translation mix-up. Martyn Glynwyn Gruffydd described it as “the highlight of my trip to Bordeaux” and said the man had become known as the ‘Sandwich Man’ among his friends who had made the trip to the Rugby World Cup.

The 37-year-old from Holyhead said he found the giggling Welsh fan standing outside a food vendor while staff seemed “flustered”. He said: “We caught the tram to a few stops before the stadium in the hope to catch the Scotland game at a hotel nearby. The hotel bar was incredibly busy and had run out of beer so we went outside to where there were loads of food and beer vendors lined up on the road towards the stadium.

“One of the boys I was with stuck his phone onto a tree so we could stand around and watch the game on that. I was starving so I went to the nearest vendor for something to eat. I was behind the now-infamous Sandwich Man. It was taking forever to serve him and the guy cooking looked busy. Sandwich Man and the few guys he was with were in hysterics..”

Martyn said Sandwich Man told him he had tried to order five sandwiches but instead was being made 14 sandwiches following a language mix-up. He said: “They turned around to tell me what was going on: he wanted one sausage sandwich and four steak ones. They all came with chips or fritters on top so that’s what you see in the pictures. There was obviously something lost in translation hence him getting 14 steak sandwiches.”

When Martyn asked the man if he realised he’d spent €120 on the 14 baguettes he told him he “just used contactless and didn’t look”. Martyn said: “What set him off laughing again was after all the steak sandwiches they placed the sausage sandwich on top of the pile [and the man said]: ‘That’s all I came for.

“I don’t know what he did with all the sandwiches as my mates were starting to head towards the stadium. I got myself a singular sandwich and went on my way!”
