Can I plant two peppers in the same 3 gallon pot. Thank u
Question: How long should I keep my pepper and tomato seedlings on a heat matte?
Darn I missed the live! I am listening to it as I work in the garden
Hi Gary,
My last average frost date is April 10th, but the weather was trending warmer with no frost in the forecast, so I chanced planting my Jolene Tomatoes on March 28th. Then the spring surprise hit with frost on April 9th, and 13th. 12 of 16 seedling survived my torture test, and cruel treatment. They are the exact quantity I needed for my garden—no spares though. They were exposed to all kinds of weather, outside during the day as long as it was above freezing, and in night with forecasted lows of below 38F, rain, wind, clouds, or sunshine didn't matter. By the time I put them in t he ground, they were tough as nails.
So, what was the result? They shrugged off the frost as if it was nothing. Not the least bit of frost burn. Now they are waist high, flowering, and setting fruit. I noticed some tiny pinholes in the lower leaves. It looks like flea beetle damage. With in in the forecast this evening, I'll hold off my pesky bug deterrence program until tomorrow. Then I'll either give them a spray with Spinosad, or dust them. With flea beetles, dusting them seems to be more effective, so I'll probably do that. It is getting to be that season again.
My radishes are gone, and I planted sweet potato slips in their place. I have two or three days of mustard left for the chickens, then I'll plant more sweet potatoes. I planted ten pots of Armenian Yard-Long Cucumbers. I am going to have so many cucumbers, that even t he chickens will get tired of eating them. The broccoli have started producing heads, so I sowed seeds for Round Zucchini and Italian Zucchini starts. I'm waiting on the cauliflower. They should start producing heads within the next few days. When they do, I'll sow seed starts for Gold Zucchini, and Italian Striped Zucchini. That should be the end of seed sowing until the carrots and parsnips are harvested.
Garden woes: I noticed a big hole behind my Romaine Lettuce, big enough for me to stick my arm down it. It is a new hole since yesterday, so I sprinkled some critter candy into the hole (Vole-X). I have hardware cloth on hand, so will line the last of my raised beds in the fall. My other problem, among my mystery lettuce is a head of Buttercrunch Lettuce, Merlot, and Black Seeded Simpson begging me to eat it. I chose the Buttercrunch, and a head of Paris Romaine lettuce. The problem was, they are large heads, and I could only eat one. The Romaine lettuce is bagged up, and in the refrigerator waiting for me to eat it later. The problems I have to deal with… LOL.
This spring was too warm for the Pak Choi and Tokyo Bekana Mustard. They bolted! Most of the mustard, and all of the Pak Choi went to the chickens. I'll try again this fall. I ran out of salsa way earlier than expected. I need three times what I made last year, so 24 jars. I also need another 24 jars of tomato sauce. I am hoping for a large tomato harvest before the peak summer heat hits. I'm down to about three meals with green beans and squash, but have more on the way. I have plenty of greens, chard, mustard, tatsoi, Komatsuna, and Pak Choi to get me through to harvest time, and have a lot of chard growing, more than enough to get me through until next year.
I put pinecones in my containers and that seems to help keep the neighbors cats out.
