South Africa Wine has released its 2024 Technical Yearbook, a comprehensive guide designed to help the local wine industry become smarter, stronger, and more sustainable.

Brimming with the latest scientific research and hands-on advice, this annual publication aims to support viticulturists, winemakers, and researchers. The yearbook comes as the organisation prepares for its summit next month, where critical industry-related matters will be under scrutiny.

According to South Africa Wine, the yearbook brings together cutting-edge work from the country’s leading experts. This year’s edition dives into a wide array of topics, including new pinotage clones, bioprotection strategies, winery wastewater management, and solutions to calcium tartrate instability.

The industry indicated that by translating complex research into practical applications, the publication offers real-world solutions tailored for both vineyard and cellar environments.

Gerard Martin, who heads up research, development, and innovation at South Africa Wine, said the book will go a long way in helping producers and the industry at large to plan better.

“This book helps our industry stay on the front foot. We want to ensure that the best and latest information is shared and used in the field and the winery. That’s how we stay competitive and keep improving,” he said.

Helping producers make informed decisions

Martin explained that the importance of the Technical Yearbook lies in its ability to equip the wine industry with essential knowledge.

“As producers grapple with challenges such as climate change, shifting market dynamics, and rising operational costs, the yearbook offers valuable tools to support informed decision-making, enhance efficiency, and foster adaptability.

“Why does this matter? Because knowledge is key. Our industry faces climate change, shifting markets, and rising costs. The Technical Yearbook gives producers the tools to make informed decisions, work more efficiently, and adapt to change,” he said.

This marks the second year the Technical Yearbook has been published under the South Africa Wine banner, as part of the organisation’s continued commitment to fostering a culture of innovation and knowledge-sharing.

“It’s a vital resource for everyone involved in the industry, from the soil to the bottle,” he said.
