Looking to plant pole beans for the first time. I have a trellis in place and I'm looking for advice on how close I should plant pole beans around each post of the trellis. The gap between each vertical post is 5.5" . Would I be able to fit 2 beans between each post?

Whats the dimension of trellis and planter?
Says 3-6” between each plant.
I’d go for 1 per pole. Depending on your climate, you’ll want to keep some space between leaves in a more humid environment.
Also easier to spot beans and trim plants.
In the past I’ve planted everything way too close and dealing with a tangle of plants is a pain and I think it decreases yield per plant too.
If there were more space behind the trellis, you could plant one on either side. With the spacing as it is, I wouldn’t plant more than one per vertical piece.
I go crazy with space, I’d put like 50
I would plant one bean on each side of every post. That works well for me. But, it seems to me that bean density doesn’t have a great effect on the crop — in my zone I do have to do a second planting a few weeks after the first to take over after the first batch have flowered, fruited, and declared themselves done. Some pods on that first crop are allowed to over-mature and dry on the vine to give me seed for next year.
p.s. very nice trellis!
I plant mine pretty close together, I find that they really don’t mind it. Maybe the vines provide some shade for the beans? I think you can plant them with 2 per pole.
I stagger plant my pole beans. Plant some and then a few weeks later plant some more. And then some more. That way I don’t hafta eat beans every day for a month. I get some and then a few weeks later the next batch is ready. I also plant some bush beans with the pole beans. I’d plant 5 or 6 bush beans in front of the pole beans.
damn you’re gonna have hella beans mang
Where did you get the lattice?
3-4 beans between each post..
I would sow two per vertical….and then thin them out to be one plant per *two* vertical supports, actually.
(You can top pole beans, and they’ll grow side-shoots)
Reason being that it’ll keep things tidier and easier to pick, and not be a huge mess in four months.
A row that size of a good pole bean variety will give you a SHITLOAD of beans. Far more than you care eat, much less actually pick (unless you have a family of about ten, who all happen to *really* like green beans for dinner every day or two)
You might be surprised at how much they produce. For example, I’ll do an 8′ row of beans & be picking 4lbs every couple days when they’re going good — it adds up fast.
I sow 1 bean every 2″.
If I’ve planted those beans before and I know they grow tall and skinny, I’ll do 2 rows on one side.
For example, Cherokee Trail of Tears beans grow 12′ tall in my climate and don’t bush out. They get 2 staggered rows 2″ apart, 4″ between rows.
We plant ours the equivalent of three of your posts apart. They quickly fill the space between them as they grow. But experiments are fun!
I’ve got 4 plants growing get up each pole in my garden lol they seem happy
