I started 60 varieties from seed this year. I kept at least 2 of each seedling from the germination trays. I lost both BKX tomato plants but have at least one of each of the other varieties. Today I took one of each of my cherry tomato types and transplanted them into straw bales. When I was growing them they had very bright lights in my VivoSun grow tent plus two fans on high constantly. They grew very big and strong. I have been moving them in and out of the house daily for a week and today transplanted just my grape and cherry tomato varieties. I trimmed off the low branches and buried them deep in a pocket of soil in the straw bales. I gave them a drink and put straw over the top of the soil so leaves can’t touch the dirt. They all immediately wilted…😩 Please re-assure me it’s temporary and they will all come back!🙏🏼 Only my second year growing tomatoes, or anything for that matter.

    They’ll be totally fine!

On another note – I am OBSESSED with your labels. That’s the most adorable/original/creative thing I’ve seen in a long time. Did you do that with chalk pens? I may have to give that a try

Should be ok. Keep an eye on their moisture levels every day this week.

They’ll be okay, I like to shade mine for days when put in the ground. That’s why I like potted tomatoes, I move the whole 5 gallon pot under the tree.

Tomatoes are surprisingly resilient. As long as it’s staying above 50ºF at night, you should be good.

So these in the photo have only been transplanted for less than one full day? I generally transplant tomatoes late in the afternoon so that they don’t need to withstand a full day of bright sun. Even better if the weather is cloudy the next day. If you transplanted them in the morning on a bright, sunny day, that might be why some of them are droopy. It takes a while for the roots to begin working properly in their new home. Usually, they will recover. Hope so! Looks like a nice setup!

They will definitely come back, just need a few days and plenty of water as they assimilate to their new home.
I have never seen this hay bale method. I like it, tell us more about it. Have you tried this before? How much soil have you added and I assume they require more watering given the drainage from the straw? Would love to learn more about this.
