What makes cheap charcoal pop like this?? It went on like this for over 30 minutes! By the time it stopped popping and spraying sparks all over the place, it had almost died out completely. Obviously not gonna use any of the remaining bag, but im curious what causes charcoal to behave like this?
Bought a huge bag of mexican charcoal on FB for $11. It sounds like the 4th of July!

Probably mesquite.
When cheap charcoal pops and sparks like fireworks, it’s usually because it wasn’t fully carbonized during production. Those pops happen when pockets of sap, moisture, or incompletely burned wood inside the charcoal suddenly heat up and release gases. Properly processed charcoal should burn evenly without the show.
Is that the cheap shitty mesquite charcoal from La michocana?
I bought a huge bag of “The Good Charcoal” lump from Sam’s Club that pops just as much as this stuff. The chunks were also very small. Contrary to what its name implies, it was definitely not good charcoal. Stay away from it.
I get big bags of mesquite in az. It has its place. Once it’s fired i one the lid and it chills out with the sand crackle pop. I’ll do meats with it.
Garbage charcoal!
My would you burn that in a Kamodo Joe???
