All of my other pepper plants will typically develop a woody like stem, but not quite like this. This one looks different and less healthy. And unfortunately its my only one of these. So i dont have anything to compare to or to replace it with. Would you plant it or just scrap it?

My two cents is it looks healthy and as you said, many peppers will get a woody stem. I’d let it grow but that’s me.

Looks fine to me. Peppers have woody stems. Seems like a very healthy plant. Put that thing in the ground and let it go lol

It does look different, is it possible that this is a grafted plant?

  4. Looks like damping off. Usually happens when it’s a seedling tho

    These get woody stems naturally.

This is a Trinidad Scorpion. Your Chef Jeffs plant is probably my missing reaper as all of my Chef Jeffs Reapers turned out to be Trinidad Scorpions. At any rate, those are some really thick, woody stems. Unfortunately this shot really doesn’t lend perspective to just how thick those stems were, but I had to use a full size pruner because they were too thick for my hand pruner to cut. This plant was over 5’ tall and 7” wide at its peak last year and produced hundreds of pods. The one you bought is ready for a bigger container. Given how big these plants can get, I’d suggest a 15-20 gallon grow bag to get the most out of it. Mine managed to break out of the pot through the bottom and put out a huge network of roots beneath the pot and into the ground which enabled it to hit its huge size.

The plant is looking good but it looks like it has had a fungal infection that it has got over. Pepper stems become woody over time but they don’t show such a straight delineation between woody and green.

There’s nothing you can do now so just look after it as normal, but you might want to only handle that plant last anytime you do anything to avoid spreading the disease.

That plant looks a-ok. The stem has lignified at the base
