KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – The National Association of Letter Carriers is partnering with FISH Hospitality Pantries for its annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.

On Saturday, May 10, residents in Knox County can fill a yellow “Stamp Out Hunger” bag given to them, a plastic bag or a box with non-perishable food items and leave it by their mailbox for their USPS worker to pick up. That food will then go FISH Hospitality Pantries, a nonprofit that feeds about 9,000 families a month in Knox County.

“I would like to say this on behalf of FISH, how honored we are that the Letter Carriers have chosen us as their charity of choice, and we’re very humbled, honored,” said Mike Carver, with FISH. “But these guys are heroes and they’re going to make a difference in this community this week. And like I said, this is going to affect thousands of families in Knox County and I’m just thankful for their love and compassion for this community.”

Shelf-stable items like peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables are high in demand. If possible, organizers ask that you donate canned goods with a pull-tab on the top so they can be opened without a can opener.

“Our goal this year is just to collect 100,000 pounds [of food] for FISH pantries so we can just come through and support our community,” said USPS employee James Collins.

“We really take pride in doing this every year, picking it up while we’re delivering the mail,” Carlos Jimenez, a USPS employee, said.

If you miss putting your food out on Saturday, put it out on Monday. USPS will still collect donations on their route through next week.
