Made this pie on Saturday using ground beef, caramelized onions, and gruyere cheese, and thought I’d share the results with my new favorite community.

To be honest I’ve never made a pie and was fairly high on marijuana whilst making it (which is how I came up with the idea in the first place), but I was actually very happy with how it turned out. It’s already been destroyed by me and my roommate, and I gotta say it’s even better the next day heated up out of the fridge. The flavors seemed to meld together very well.

Anyway, happy Cinco de Mayo…who knows what’s next on this glorious Monday

The onions AND that flaky crust go so hard. Please save me a slice.

P.S. I’m making this. Maybe tomorrow after the store. I’m going to use turkey sausage.

It’s a shepherds pie but top crust instead of mashed potatoes. I would call it onion beef pie if I were in Sweeney Todd times

So, my nana had a legit old timey onion pie she always made and I’m crushed my mom doesn’t know where the recipe ended up. It had a crust made from crushed ritz or saltine crackers, the way you make a graham cracker crust, and the filling was mostly sautéed onions and cheddar cheese, I think with a bit of egg to bind it. She and I were the only ones who would eat it, and I looooved it.

My mother from the northeast of England would make a meat pie like this almost weekly. I love a good savory pie! Add a few slices of potato next time!

I’ve had some empanadas that were practically 40% meat and 60% onion. Legendarily good, although I think there’s some other stuff mixed in to make it so. This is like a big version of that!
