I refuse to work anywhere where that’s the norm.

I for sure got exposed talking with my mixer when a chef popped in to see how I was doing weeks after my chef walked and left me solo on my graveyard shift. I was doing one of those sarcastic “OH YEAH *of course* you tipped over and spilled batter because that’s how you ARE!” sounding crazy af with music blasting lol… got so much grace from that dude afterward

I did 17-18 hours a day, 7 days a week for 6 weeks, opening a restaurant i didn’t own. My salary at the time (as sous chef) $27,500. My feet bled. I was delirious to the point it tried grabbing some meat stuck to the guard of the still spinning meat slicer…. I guess i did take 4 hours off that day at least.

One of my coworkers would be telling me a story, she’d go into the walk-in, and COME OUT IN A DIFFERENT PART OF THE STORY. This happened very very regularly.

One of the reasons why I went corporate. My DO would freak out if I worked a 16 hour day and he’d force my GM to give me an extra day off. Not all chains have policies about hours that they stick to but it’s an important thing to ask about during the interview process. You should make sure there’s a margin defined, mine is 44 hours. Not to exceed 50. After that, make sure you hit them with “what steps does upper management take to ensure salaried workers aren’t put in a postion where they regularly exceed the acceptable amount of hours?” A place that will gladly exploit you will flag you as unhirable for these types of questions.

i just quit from a place where the owners were on board with me working part time bcs i was a student. i started as part time but it became a full time pretty quick as there were lots of work. after 2 months of working there he wanted me to open at 10am and close at 2am while being a student and while my finaks were nearing.

i found an indian place and i make breakfast there now. as a part timer. my exams are starting and i have time to enjoy them. the owners are ok with me as long as i give them the dates and hours of my exams and i can compensate my hours after coming from exams. don’t let yourself used by others.
