In this video, I visit Boudin Bakery’s flagship location on Fisherman’s Wharf to experience San Francisco’s most iconic food tradition – their legendary sourdough bread bowls filled with creamy clam chowder. Is this 175-year-old recipe still worth the hype in 2025?

Since 1849, Bodine Bakery has been serving up what might be San Francisco’s most iconic food. Sourdough bread bowls filled with creamy clam chowder. Today, I’m taking you inside their flagship location on Fisherman’s Wararf to taste the legendary combination that tourists and locals have been lining up for decades. What makes Bootin special isn’t their 175-year-old sourdough starter, although that’s pretty impressive. It’s that they’ve perfected the art of creating a bread bowl that stays crispy on the outside while soaking up just enough chowder on the inside without getting soggy. I’ve tried bread bowls all over the country, but there’s something about bodies that keeps people coming back generation after generation. Find out the San Francisco Classic still lives up to the hype in 2025. Today we’re trying Bodin in SF cuz I’m a local and we’re going to see how it is. That’s what they say is FS. Wait, S. We’re going to try their clam chowder soup. Every tourist must know if it’s worth it. That’s kind of overhyped. I need to know if it’s worth it. There she blows our fisherman’s warf where everyone goes. This how it looks. Fisherman’s warf down there. But this is all the warf. Well, it’s 39. Yeah, it’s all the It’s the water view. And Alcatraz is right there. So, you can kind of get a nice hopping view of that as well. But obviously sourdough on the side, known for it. Really worth it. So excited to eat all the sourdough. As long as you go to the one one of these and the clam chowder and we’re going to test how good this is. You provided it. They are whipping these things out. She goes so fast making these. They came out about 15 seconds. This is ours. Bonus content is we actually got something for the Chowder Hut which is also very rival one. And we’re going to compare them. Chowder huts a little thicker. And this is Bodin. We’re actually going to compare them now. You can see. Look. Oh yeah. Look at this. is a little looser. Oh, this we got chunks of chowder in there. It looks like they both give you about the same amount as bread, but we’re here to try bodin bread. Squishy, hard outside. That’s what they told me to have. All right, let’s try it. First bite. It can be wide. Okay. Creamy. I can taste the chowder in it. I mean, I guess Oh, actually, it does have more bits than they go in the bottom. Presentation is nice. You want to do the comparison? I guess we’re going to compare them right off the bat. I guess clam chowder has got a stronger fish taste instantly off the bat for sure. Yeah, they got bigger chunks and clam and chowder hut. The bread this is bodin bread too. It’s they’re both bodin bread. Yeah, it looks the same. Okay, so Bodin is the bread supply around here and they’ve got some good bread. I’ll say it. It is soft in the middle. We got a nice little crust crunch at the at the top here, which is nice. Hear that? I think Bodines has less in the bowl. I think they put more in the other one. Let’s try with some bread as well. It kind of needed to soften up. It’s about $15 with tax. I’m actually kind of disappointed how much they’re putting in this. Like, it’s mostly just bread in there. You’re not getting that much soup. I think it’d be better to get soup on the side cuz I feel like I mean, you can see the bread basically instantly. We can try a straight dip, a dipster. [Music] That bread is fantastic. Honestly, it really is good. I think it’s carrying the chowder soup. It tastes really creamy, which is nice. Yeah, it’s subtle, but the clam the the soup itself, I think it tastes really good. I don’t really think it’s worth 15 bucks, I’ll be honest. They’re not giving you enough soup. The bread alone, though. Crunchy. I almost recommend just getting a loaf. But it is fun to dip it in. Look how much bread you’re getting. You’re not even eating this bread half time. Oh, we’re trying the clam chowder one again. Clam chowder hut. If you like fish, more fishy flavor, clammy flavor, Chowder Hut. If you want a more creamy, you want to go to Bodí. The bread is both the same in both cuz Bodin’s bread is just superior. And apparently the Chowder Hut uses Bodin’s bread. That’s how good it is. So, you’re literally getting the same thing except one has more clam chowder bits in it at the clam chowder hut where Bodin is creamier, smoother, probably better for tourists who not don’t like this fish as much. If you’re not big into fish, if you’re not big into like that seafood taste, bodin time. I’ll see you the next time we’re in here in the SF. What I meant to say is chowder. Ciao. Look at me mutilating this bread bowl. Now we’re eating the bread bowl. Definitely better with the soup, but it’s still really good.
