Hi friends! I do not post often or even use reddit much these days, but I need advice from other spice heads. Spice is my favorite flavor and most of what I eat is spicy. The issue I’m having is that my favorite meal is also the spiciest meal I’m happy to eat on a regular basis. It is the “Damn Hot” level from Hattie B’s (half bird dark if you’re curious). It’s like a dream. The flavor and spice level are perfectly balanced.
My issue is that while I love and always eat spicy food, I did not grow up eating it. Most of my family can’t handle spice. So I think my intestines simply can’t handle it. I eat it once or twice a week, and each time for at least 12 hours of the next day my lower intestines are killing me and I’m constantly going to the bathroom. I REALLY don’t want to give up my damn hot Nashville chicken.
Do I just take a pro-biotic and eat more yogurt? Should I take the pro-biotic before or after I eat it? Are there other things I should be eating to strengthen my gut?

I wrote this in my hour of desperate need from the toilet.

Eat or drink yogurt based drinks afterward. More fiber

Always eat food before you eat SPICY. Will help absorb the capsaicin. Also drink or eat dairy products as well.

I am suffering from this same issue and have just recently started to take Omeprazole OTC, I can already feel a difference and am only on day 3

  5. It’s overwhelmingly likely that either/both:

You dont eat anything like fried chicken unless you eat it here

You arent eating any relevant spice between trips to rhis chicken joint

Im just saying, eating a jalapeño every meal doesnt necessarily have much to do with going out and eating a fistful of habaneros once a week. Its also a volume thing

I can eat a habanero or 5 and not suffer any noticeable discomfort (below deck). Im not sure what the total volume of capsaicin in a handful of small habaneros is, its mainly just concentrated. If an average habanero has 100mg of capsaicin (total guess), thats half a gram for 5.

But thats only like 2 oz or less of total food. If youre eating some extremely hot chicken/sauce, the concentration is likely lower but if the volume is in *pounds*, then you may be eating several times the total capsaicin. See where im coming from? Certainly our stomachs appreciate the heat being a bit dilluted with nutritional mass, but digestion takes hours, youre still going to have all that capsaicin somewhere in your gut more or less all at once, and this is where most people feel the most discomfort (that or the sphincter)

Im pretty sure if you actually ate this chicken in a similar volume daily you’d quickly acclimate to the total capsaicin as well as heart disease

  6. I love me some Hattie Bs! However, it is suuuuper greasy/oily since they add the spicy glaze (not sure if it is oil, lard, or butter-based) after frying it. My stomach has more issues with the oiliness than the spice

Take this with a grain of salt, but I talked to an acupuncturist with a background in nutrition who said that eating something bitter to mix in your stomach can help ease the digestive discomfort that come with really spicy foods. It seems to work for me (eating extremely dark chocolate) and helps with the cramps, but i still might not have a completely solid stool afterward.
