Ate at Le Cinq this past week and it was excellent. The food was good but the service was awesome. The restaurant is formal but the service staff are fun and very talkative. Definitely not stuffy.

Some of my favorite dishes:

Potato Gnocchi with Saffron: Excellent flavors which tasted like gnocchi but was much more tender than any gnocchi I’ve had.

Pistachio Sorbet with Citrus Flavors: This dish has very strong contrasting flavors which seemed to go well together and the wine paring of Jerez Fini Tradicion was excellent.

The signature dish of Spaghetti Gratin was very good. My favorite of the night.

Crunchy Grapefruit: This I was not excited about as I’m not a citrus fruit lover but it was excellent.

I was very hesitant about this place due to the price and so many people condemning the food here (and so many bad meals with chefs who trained under him for me), so I reluctantly went on my last trip to Paris…and it was a top-tier meal for me! His ingredient quality, while not quite L’Ambroisie’s, was impressive for an urban restaurant. And I’m usually a food conservative but I enjoyed Le Squer’s playful modern touches on a base of true faithfulness to French cuisine rarely seen at this level in Paris anymore. A happy and most well deserved 3 stars!

  2. I haven’t eaten his food since Ledoyen but he was a truly great chef there. The grapefruit dessert is considered the perfect d’Yquem pairing (it was designed for it).

Nice looking cheese as well. It looks like many could be from Antony (the best affineur I am aware of). Were they?

If Le Squer still actively cooked in the restaurant this would be undoubtedly give L’Ambroisie a run for its money
