Has this smoked salmon gone bad? Just opened it and there is no expiration date on the packaging.

It’s fish you would instantly smell if it was bad and be gagging right now.

  2. Shirowoh

Doesn’t look bad, as others say, smell is a dead giveaway

Looks like lox to me. Yeah that would smell horrendous.

“It has absolutely no smell whatsoever.”
“Put it back! Somebody will eat it!”

Your stomach will tell you. Down the hatch

  6. There’s no expiration because it’s previously frozen. The store is supposed to date it when they pull it out of the freezer.

That color difference is the fat layer that insulates the fish near the skin. Totally normal, and the brown colored layer is actually the most healthy part.

The brown part you are referring to is apart of the salmon and not bad. Salmon is not %100 red inside, they had brown and white bits to their meat as well.

We have smoked salmon eggs Benedict on our menu…have opened hundreds of packages like this. You are fine. Enjoy!

Thank you all for your responses! Glad to hear that the different color at the bottom is not a sign that it’s going bad, but just a normal part of the fish. Will eat it then!

Can you post a pic of the front and back of packaging. Sometimes expirations are sneaky

Smoked salmon that’s from the grocery store’s private labeling (i.e. Kroger-Private Selection) usually comes frozen. So when it time to stock it out, the employees will thaw and date them with a date gun (paper stickers). Looks like they didn’t date it, but they usually last for a month on the shelf.

It looks green at the bottom I wouldn’t eat it
