In this special year that celebrates the 125th anniversary of the publication, Michelin is pleased to present the new selection of the MICHELIN Guide Rio de Janeiro & São Paulo 2025, which was unveiled on May 12th during a ceremony held at the emblematic Rosewood São Paulo hotel.
The MICHELIN Guide recommends a total of 149 restaurants, 18 of which are newly joining the selection. Among the winners are the five restaurants that have renewed their Two MICHELIN Stars, the four new restaurants that have earned One MICHELIN Star, and the five that have joined the select group of Bib Gourmand restaurants for their best price/quality ratio. Moreover, the three restaurants already recognized by the Green Star retain their distinction, and 12 newly recommended restaurants are joining the selection.
Gwendal Poullennec, International director of the MICHELIN Guide, says:
“Brazil’s gastronomic level – reflected in a thousand nuances in these two magnificent cities – continues to demonstrate personality and constant progress.
In addition to the skills of the young talents discovered every year – male and female chefs who apply the latest techniques to both traditional and more innovative recipes. This quest for excellence in service and sommellerie also has a very positive effect on the final customer experience.”
Five restaurants with Two MICHELIN Stars renew their distinction
In this category, which recognizes restaurants offering exceptional cuisine “worth a detour,” D.O.M. (São Paulo), Evvai (São Paulo), Lasai (Rio de Janeiro), Oro (Rio de Janeiro), and Tuju (São Paulo) have renewed their distinction. They continue to be the most attractive culinary references in Brazil.
Four restaurants are awarded their first One MICHELIN Star
The 2025 selection continues to grow, with four new additions to this category: two in Rio de Janeiro and two in São Paulo. This brings the number of restaurants awarded One MICHELIN Star to a total of twenty.
Casa 201, Rio de Janeiro
Everything about this restaurant – located in Jardim Botânico (Botanical Garden) – makes it feel like home, right down to its name. João Paulo Frankenfeld, a chef from Rio de Janeiro who traveled to Lyon to receive training at the Institut Paul Bocuse, returned to his homeland to work as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu and, from there, decided to open his own establishment. Here, he proposes flavorful, technically complex dishes on a constantly evolving tasting menu, always showcasing seasonal Brazilian ingredients and incorporating delicate nods to French gastronomy that hint at his years spent in Europe.
KANOE, São Paulo
Located in Jardins, this Japanese restaurant is the perfect option for those seeking the gastronomic club experience. In its neat, minimalist interior, dominated by a large counter for nine customers, Chef Tadashi Shiraishi is the master of ceremonies who explains each dish on his Omakase menu, bringing all his ancestors’ culinary knowledge within reach of diners’ palates. The chef treats each product with infinite respect, showcasing them as true gems.
Oseille, Rio de Janeiro
Thomas Troisgros represents the latest generation in a renowned line of chefs of French origin. The name of this establishment alludes to a famous dish created by his grandfather, the great chef Pierre Troisgros. Located above his restaurant Toto – also in the MICHELIN Guide –, this minimalist space centers around large U-shaped counter with seating for 16 customers that surrounds the panoramic kitchen where all may contemplate his work in detail. The unique, modern tasting menu combines the best local produce with the most elaborate French culinary techniques.
Ryo Gastronomia, São Paulo
After a thorough renovation, maintaining the minimalist Japanese aesthetic and that special essence that connects us with nature, this restaurant is once again tasting success. Although there are also several tables, the best option for enjoying the experience is at the counter, where diners may watch Chef Edson Yamashita at work. His Omakase menu is about ritual, delicacy, respect, flavor… and nearly surgical cuts of incredible precision.
MICHELIN’s three Green Stars renew their distinction
The city of São Paulo – which is home to the three restaurants in the country with this distinction (A Casa do Porco, Corrutela and Tuju) – continues to position itself as the main Brazilian benchmark for good sustainable practices, leading the way in terms of real ecological awareness.
Five new Bib Gourmand restaurants: recognizing the best price/quality ratio
With five new additions to the 2025 selection, all located in São Paulo – A Casa do Porco, Cepa, Clandestina, Jacó, and Manioca da Mata – there are now a total of 40 restaurants with the iconic Bib Gourmand: seven in Rio de Janeiro and 33 in the São Paulo capital.
Twelve additional recommended restaurants
With these twelve new additions, the total number of Recommended restaurants reaches 84, with 30 in Rio de Janeiro and 54 in São Paulo. Among them are options for all tastes, from those that showcase the flavors of traditional Brazilian cuisine – such as Sal Gastronomia – to those more focused on seafood – such as OCYÁ Ilha – to those that sweep diners to faraway destinations without the risk of jet lag: Italy (Babbo Osteria, Giulietta Carni, Marena Cucina, and Trattoria Evvai), Japan (Goya Zushi and Shin Zushi), Spain (Cala del Tanit) or Portugal (Quinta da Henriqueta).
Newly recommended restaurants in Rio de Janeiro:
Babbo Osteria, OCYÁ Ilha, Quinta da Henriqueta, and Rufino Parrilla.
Newly recommended restaurants in São Paulo:
Cala del Tanit, Giulietta Carni, Goya Zushi, Le Jardin, Marena Cucina, Sal Gastronomia, Shin Zushi, and Trattorita Evvai.
The Three Michelin Special Awards Winners 2025
The MICHELIN Guide, with its distinctions recognizes and gives a wonderful visibility to the professionals who elevate the customer experience with their daily dedication and passion.
– Young Chef Award – Iago Jacomussi (Jacó, São Paulo)
It is quite extraordinary to open a restaurant at the age of just 26, but it’s not surprising in the case of Iago Jacomussi. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, the chef has worked in prestigious restaurants with MICHELIN Stars not only in Brazil (Evvai, Maní and Tangará Jean-Georges) but also in Portugal and Denmark (Belcanto in Lisbon and Jordnær in Gentofte, in the outskirts of Copenhagen). At the head of a very young team, Iago advocates a casual atmosphere with dishes to share. The technically advanced cuisine has Brazilian roots and is enriched with interesting references to other cultures around the world.
– Sommelier Award – Marcelo da Fonseca Lopes Costa (Evvai, São Paulo)
Interest in oenology continues to grow, and is reflected in the teams, with increasingly erudite professionals who seek to elevate the gastronomic experience through well-considered pairings. Marcelo da Fonseca, Evvai’s young sommelier, is a graduate of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. He stands out for the elegance, friendliness and enthusiasm with which he advises diners, according to our tastes, to discover the best local and international wines.
– Service Award – Rodrigo Cavalcante (Tuju, São Paulo)
The synchronicity, elegance and personalized service of Tuju, which operates with the precision of a Swiss watch, falls under the direction of maître Rodrigo Cavalcante. He is the one who presents the menu and explains the concepts or hidden details behind each of Chef Ivan Ralston’s dishes. His way of working, guiding the staff by example and with discretion, uplifts the experience and turns it into something magical.
