My wife is Mexican and works at a Mexican restaurant and the owners go to Mexico every weekend. They brought back this for us and it seems to me like it’s concrete. Opinions??

Doesn’t look like natural volcanic rock. Chuck it

You can see the paint wearing off. This is painted concrete. Not real.

Nothing better than crushed sand and paint in my guacamole

Mexican here. The thing that really sad is that even some of the artisanal items that are core to mexico are now exported from china and are so, so, bad like seen here. I am lucky I inherited my grandmas molcajete but if you really want a real one you have to go to an artisanal town.

I’m in the market for a molcajete. Recommendations?

Cheapskates. Being Mexican restaurant owners, I doubt they didn’t know

it’ll make a great planter for succulents

EDIT: just kidding! it’s a terrible planter, no drainage hole

  9. Why come back from Mexico with this? What’s even the point?

wow that’s wow. Painted concrete…and people fall for this junk. Tourists just love buying junk, fakes, overpriced crap, whether it’s something like this or horrible local scam tequila or fake cubans…it’s so weird.

mos def concrete. if it was real, the grain would be throughout.

It’s the thought that counts. They didn’t know any better. They tried and failed. If my boss grabbed a bag of dirt and gifted it to me I would be ecstatic from their trip.

That’s just a souvenir knick-knack. No way it’s food safe.

I’m so sorry. I went to Mexico last year looking for a molcajete. They were all cement. Then 2 days later, my tía gave me Abuela’s!!

I’ve seen even worse ones for sale in Mexico. Stacks of differently crumbling cast concrete items in all sizes. Not surprised, but this is definitely disappointing.

lmfao where does one buy a piñata quality mortar? Tijuana I’m assuming

  17. This molcajete post man, if it works like a molcajete who cares the material doesn’t add anything to the salsa. I’m Mexican in Mexico and I use a marbel one lol . What really affect the flavour is roasting the tomatoes, onions and garlic cloves on the oven. Tastes a lot better in a comal.

My fellow tequila blanco enjoyers, this isnt a good look

Doesn’t resemble my molcajete, not at all.

Reminds me of the “Cohibas” My dad brought me from south of Brownsville. He was so excited to give me some “real” Cuban cigars.

It seems to have some form of petroleum distillate
